Welcoming Bishop René Ramirez to the Sandhurst Diocese

Members of the Catherine McAuley College Bendigo community were honoured to attend the Liturgical Reception of Bishop René Ramirez at Sacred Heart Cathedral on Thursday 30 July.

Representing the College were members of the Leadership Team, Senior Student Leaders and Choir members. Our student leaders played an important role in welcoming guests and serving as ushers throughout the celebration, while members of our choir joined voices with singers from across the Diocese to lead and support the liturgy through music.

The liturgical reception marked a significant occasion for the Sandhurst Diocese as Bishop René was formally welcomed into his ministry among the people of the Diocese. It was a privilege for our students and staff to participate in this historic event and to witness the strong sense of faith, community and hope that characterised the celebration.

Throughout his homily, Bishop René spoke about mercy, a concept close to our hearts here at Catherine McAuley College Bendigo:

“Saint Matthew tells us that Jesus travelled through the towns and villages, teaching, proclaiming the Good News and healing the sick. When he saw the crowds, he was moved with compassion because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Jesus did not see a problem to be managed. He saw people. He recognised their weariness, their wounds and their hunger for God. His compassion moved him to act.

This Gospel inspired my episcopal motto: Zelus et Misericordia – Zeal and Mercy.

These words express the sacred heart of Jesus. His mercy allows us to feel the suffering of His people. His zeal moves Him to draw close, proclaim the Kingdom and bring healing”.

We extend our warm welcome to Bishop René and look forward to journeying together in faith as he begins his episcopal ministry in Sandhurst.
