SCHOOL SPORT VICTORIA - LODDON MALLEE REGION

On Monday 20 July, six Catherine McAuley College Bendigo netball teams travelled to Red Energy Arena in Bendigo to compete in the School Sport Victoria Loddon Mallee Regional Netball Finals. The Senior Girls, Intermediate Girls, Intermediate Boys, Year 8 Girls, Year 7 Girls and Junior Boys teams earned their place at the regional finals after progressing through the previous stage of competition and were set to face the strongest school teams from across the Loddon Mallee region.

With every team aiming to finish in first place and secure a coveted spot at the School Sport Victoria State Finals, the day promised to be a show of highly competitive netball. Matches were played in a round robin format, with games consisting of two 15-minute halves, providing teams with valuable court time to settle into matches, make adjustments, and showcase their skills across the day.

SENIOR GIRLS

The Senior Girls started the day with a playing squad of eleven as two players were ruled out with injury. Despite the setback, the girls were excited to see how they would go against what they knew to be tough opposition as they worked through new on-court combinations from the previous tournament. Across a big day, the girls played six games, with minimal rest time in between. Despite the challenges the girls had an amazing day and their results are as follows:

Game 1: Game one against Wycheproof Secondary College saw all eleven players get on court. After a tough start where both teams went goal-for-goal, the girls were able to settle and gradually start building a lead halfway through the first half. Changes made at the break saw the momentum continue and in true style, the girls continued to create opportunities as they went on to secure a strong win 32-17.

Game 2: Game two against Robinvale Secondary College was a free-flowing game for the girls, with all players once again getting valuable court time. The Robinvale girls were trying hard but were unable to match CMCB’s experience and speed. As the chance presented again to rest players, all the girls played their part in securing a huge win 43-4 with accurate goaling and whole-court defence bamboozling their opposition.

Game 3: Round 3 saw the girls come up against Bendigo Senior Secondary College. This was a match that the team knew that they could not underestimate; therefore with this in mind, the girls shot out of the blocks, establishing a 4-goal lead quickly, only for BSSC to claw that back after a few costly turnovers. A few nervous moments were evident through the first ten minutes; however, the group settled and secured a couple of telling intercepts which enabled the team to once again gain the upper hand and build momentum in the latter part of the half. Once again, the bench players took to the court and continued to outplay their opposition for the rest of the match. This scenario was invaluable as the coach was able to swing the changes and make sure that everyone was ready for whatever the rest of the day might throw at them. The final score was a win for CMCB, 31-20.

Game 4: This match was what was described in the moment as a ‘messy one’, as the girls found it hard to find their rhythm due to the physicality of St Mary MacKillop College, Swan Hill. It was tough going all match, especially for the goalers who were copping a fair bit of body contact for the duration of the game. Despite the harassment, the girls kept their composure and never gave up. Needing to enact the changing of the guard, coach Frawley swapped her goalers around to give the girls a break from the unwarranted close attention. These changes saw the team start to gain momentum as well as once again giving all players valuable court time. It was a terrific team effort as a 25-12 win was secured on the back of all players displaying resilience and determination.

Game 5: In what was now a common theme for the day, Game 5 against Mildura Secondary College started with both teams going goal-for-goal for much of the first half. It was at this point in the day that the 15-minute halves became beneficial as the coach had time to use rolling subs to find a settled on-court combination that matched the opposition’s intensity. At the halftime break, some goaling changes were made that had instant effect as the girls pulled away to a 9-3 lead. From that point onwards the girls really stepped it up, with the defence end hitting their straps, effecting multiple turnovers and creating opportunities for the goalers who shot beautifully. The win that resulted was pivotal as Mildura had also won its first 4 games, so the 24-10 scoreline highlighted just how impressive the team was playing.

Game 6: By the time game 6 against Rochester Secondary College came around, exhaustion had set in – the girls’ legs were heavy, and they were ready for the end of the day. A slow and physical start had the team needing extra height in the goaling ring to counteract the height and physicality of the opposition defence. The girls were giving it their all, and their effort and perseverance paid off as they were up by one goal at the halftime break. Knowing that if they pushed through the pain barrier and kept working cohesively, they would be able to overcome their opposition. From the start of the second half, the girls dug deep, created turnovers, applied intense full-court pressure and shot brilliantly to run out winners 26-20.

Everyone in the team represented the College so well: the teamwork, resilience and willingness to do what it takes to be on a successful team were the highlights. Thanks to our two injured players, Eden Pollard and Adeline Neilson, who scored for the day. Congratulations team, and good luck at the State Finals!!

INTERMEDIATE GIRLS

The Intermediate Girls’ first game against Swan Hill College saw the team get off to a strong start, quickly adapting to playing together and building strong connections on the court. It was a highly physical contest, but the players remained composed, worked hard for each other, and matched the intensity throughout the game to secure an 8-goal victory.

The second game against Victory Christian College was a dominant performance from the outset. Strong defensive pressure kept Victory scoreless in the first half. The second half saw the girls maintain their intensity and impressive cohesion as they recorded an emphatic 47–7 win.

The next match against Maryborough Education Centre followed a similar pattern, with the girls controlling the game all across the court. Outstanding defensive pressure created numerous turnovers, while accurate shooting and excellent feeding from the midcourt ensured a convincing victory.

In the fourth match against Mildura Secondary College, the team responded well to positional and tactical changes, adapting confidently and continuing to dominate the contest. Consistent pressure and teamwork resulted in another impressive win by 30 goals.

The team’s final game was against St Joseph’s College Echuca and this match proved to be another tough contest. The team started strongly and established an early lead through steady and composed play across the court, which proved to be crucial. Echuca fought back hard as they lifted their work rate and reduced the margin; however the girls remained focused and finished strongly, pulling away in the closing stages of the match to secure another well-deserved win.

Overall, it was an outstanding day of netball. The players demonstrated excellent teamwork, adaptability, determination, and sportsmanship throughout the tournament. Their defensive pressure, smooth ball movement through the midcourt, and accurate finishing in attack were key factors in an unbeaten day of competition. Congratulations girls, and good luck at the State Finals.

INTERMEDIATE BOYS

The Intermediate Boys Netball team faced a challenge before they even stepped onto the court, with most of the Year 10 players unavailable as they were away on camp. With just two of the original squad members available, the team was fortunate that a number of Year 9 boys were able to step up and fill some very big shoes. With no opportunity to train together beforehand, the team simply went about getting the job done.

The boys played five games across the day, winning four and only dropping one match to a very polished St Joseph's College Echuca. Echuca proved to be a well-oiled machine with strong connections all over the court, but our boys took the challenge right up to them and competed fiercely from start to finish. Considering this group had come together without a training session and with many last-minute changes, their performance throughout the day was nothing short of outstanding.

Ryan Packer was terrific in Goal Shooter, proving to be a strong target, but when the team needed some extra height in defence, he seamlessly switched ends and continued to have an impact. Angelo Cuadra brought incredible speed and athleticism to the defensive end as his ability to jump seemed almost superhuman at times, ensuring the opposition attackers were always under pressure.

One of our original members, Carter Andrews, provided strength, composure and control in attack, helping settle the team whenever it was needed. In the midcourt, Loui Travaglia, Lon Schelfhout and Jimi Read covered the court tirelessly, chasing every loose ball and providing endless drive through the centre.

Another of the original squad members, Darcy Tyler, really stood up on the day. His pace, attacking movement and accurate shooting kept the team in the contest throughout and showcased his willingness to lead from the front. Miller Polglase was the ultimate utility player, displaying remarkable flexibility by moving between defence and attack whenever the team needed him. Like a Swiss Army knife, he could do it all and did so with enthusiasm and effectiveness.

A special mention must go to Tadhg O’Keefe, whose energy, encouragement and positivity helped keep spirits high from start to finish.

YEAR 8 GIRLS

The Year 8 Girls made an excellent start to the day with a convincing 27-12 victory over Irymple Secondary College. The match was closely contested during the opening stages, but CMCB gradually took control and lifted their intensity in the second half. Strong teamwork through the midcourt and accurate finishing in attack allowed the girls to pull away on the scoreboard, turning a competitive game into a comfortable win. It was a great all-round team performance and a positive way to begin their regional finals campaign.

The girls continued their strong form with an outstanding 47-5 victory over St Arnaud Secondary College in Round 2. They played an excellent brand of netball, moving the ball seamlessly from defence through the midcourt and into attack. Accurate goal shooting ensured the team capitalised on their opportunities, while strong defensive pressure created numerous turnovers. The girls worked exceptionally well together, supporting one another across all areas of the court and maintaining a high standard of play throughout the match. It was a polished team performance and another impressive result.

In their third game, the girls faced their toughest challenge of the tournament, narrowly defeating their opponents, St Mary MacKillop College Swan Hill, 26-21 in a physical and tightly contested match. Every possession was hard-fought, with both teams applying strong pressure across the court. Despite the intensity of the game, the team remained composed and worked tirelessly for one another to secure the five-goal victory. The resilience and determination shown by everyone was outstanding and highlighted the girls’ ability to perform under pressure.

The fourth game was a 27-13 victory against Rochester Secondary College, with the girls continuing to build their combinations and confidence. The team once again displayed excellent teamwork, trialled new positional changes, and explored different player combinations. It was pleasing to see the attacking structures and plays they had been working on at training come together so effectively, with several new combinations working beautifully and creating strong scoring opportunities.

The fifth and final game of the day against St Mary’s School Robinvale finished with a 26-12 victory. After a long day of competition, legs were tired, and the girls were slow to start. However, they quickly switched back on, found their rhythm, and regained control of the match. Strong passages of play across the court saw them finish the day as comfortable winners.

Overall, the Year 8 Girls should be extremely proud of their performance throughout the tournament. Their excellent teamwork, constant encouragement of one another, outstanding sportsmanship, and strong display of netball skills were evident in every game and were key factors in their successful day.

YEAR 7 GIRLS

The Year 7 Girls Netball Team enjoyed an outstanding day, finishing as undefeated champions after winning all five of their matches. The team displayed excellent skill, teamwork, determination and sportsmanship throughout the day, improving with each game and proving too strong for their opposition.

The girls started the tournament with a hard-fought 19–15 victory over St Mary MacKillop College Swan Hill. It was a competitive opening match, with the team showing great composure under pressure to secure the win.

In Game 2, the team continued their strong form, defeating St Joseph’s College Echuca 25–11. Their defensive pressure and smooth ball movement across the court allowed them to build a commanding lead and comfortably take the win.

The third game saw the girls face Victory Christian College, where they once again demonstrated their consistency and teamwork, recording a convincing 22–14 win. Strong passages of play and accurate shooting ensured they remained unbeaten heading into the final rounds.

The team's confidence continued to grow in Game 4 against St Joseph’s College Mildura. Playing some of their best netball of the day, they dominated the match from the outset and secured an impressive 34–11 victory.

In their final game against Maryborough Education Centre, the girls finished the tournament in style. Combining tight defence, quick transitions and accurate finishing, they recorded a comprehensive 34–7 win to complete a perfect tournament record.

Across the five matches, the team scored an incredible 134 goals while conceding just 58, highlighting both their attacking strength and defensive efforts. Their undefeated performance was a testament to their hard work, teamwork and positive attitude throughout the day.

Congratulations to all players on an exceptional achievement and a well-deserved tournament victory. They represented their school with pride and should be extremely proud of their efforts.

JUNIOR BOYS

The Year 7/8 Boys entered the competition full of confidence and started strongly against St Joseph's College Mildura in their opening match. The game was fairly intense; however the boys kept their cool and didn't let the pressure affect them. Their team play saw them come away with an excellent win of 20-4, with every team member contributing on court.

Game 2 against St Joseph’s College Echuca was the one the team expected to be their toughest challenge. Despite the pressure from the opposition, the boys stayed calm and played with great composure, working the ball around methodically and creating excellent opportunities in attack. Defensively, they maintained relentless pressure from start to finish, contesting every ball and making every goal hard-earned for the opposition. The boys maintained a five-goal lead of for much of the game and, although St Joseph’s mounted a late comeback, the boys held firm to record a well-deserved 16-13 win and hence finished as the Regional Champions.
