Intermediate Girls Soccer

On Tuesday 8 September, the CMCB Intermediate Girls Soccer Team made their way down to Melbourne to compete in the state soccer finals at Darebin International Sports Centre.

The first game was played at 9:30am with a chaotic start against McKinnon College. The girls unfortunately ended with a 2-0 loss, with two goals being scored in the first half. The attackers worked hard up top by pressuring McKinnon's defence while our midfield players kept the ball moving through the middle of the grounds and our defence held up a great fight against McKinnon’s attack. During the second half of the game the girls gave it their all on the pitch, keeping McKinnon at bay, and creating a number of opportunities themselves, however they were not able to score.

After a bit of a rest the girls fired up again to play their second game of the day against Thornbury High School. The game started off strong in CMCB’s favour with the girls putting up a hefty fight. Thornbury put a lot of pressure on the defenders until there was an indiscriminate collision between one of their players and a CMCB players which resulted in a yellow card and a free corner kick in CMCB’s favour. Sophie Healy took the corner, and the ball found its way straight into the back of the net. After half-time, the girls continued to play hard and create opportunities as well as defend relentlessly when required, which prevented Thornbury from scoring. A fantastic 1-0 result was secured.

The girls' final game was against Daylesford Secondary College and resulted in a 2–0 loss. Despite the scoreline, their enthusiasm, determination and teamwork were outstanding throughout the match. The defensive group worked tirelessly to limit Daylesford's opportunities, showing great resilience under pressure. The midfielders consistently tracked back to support the defence, demonstrating a strong team-first attitude and ensuring every player contributed where required. Up forward, the attackers remained well positioned and continued to work hard to create opportunities, while also supporting their teammates across the field. Although the girls were unable to find the back of the net, their willingness to work together and support one another was a highlight of the game.

The day ended with one win and two losses but everyone on the team did a fantastic job across all three games. The girls gave it their all and played to the best of their ability to the last whistle.
