'Alone' Year 9 News - Guest Speaker 'Muzza' Visit

Muzza was the runner up in Series 3 of 'Alone' and was fascinating speaker for Year 9 students.

This term in Year 9 English, we are studying the SBS series ‘Alone’ Australia, a reality television series where contestants are dropped into a remote wilderness and must survive completely on their own for as long as possible using limited supplies.

On Friday 24 March the Year 9s participated in an English incursion with a guest speaker, Murray ‘Muzza’ James, who was the runner up in Series 3, and the oldest contestant to ever appear on the show.

Throughout the presentation, Muzza gave some behind-the-scenes information, and described both the physical and mental challenges he faced. This is the second year in a row that Muzza has presented to our Year 9 cohort, and we are extremely grateful to him and his wife Bron, who also assisted in the presentation, for giving up their time for us.

During the interview, I learned that Muzza is a nice, laid-back guy who is a dedicated family man and considers himself a true "bushman”. He was incredibly well prepared for his time on ’Alone’. Even though he could have easily become bored or discouraged, he stayed mentally tough and pushed through the challenge. It was interesting to hear him explain the tools he used and the structures he built. One of his smartest moves was using his tent to catch rainwater so he always had enough to drink. He also built a smoker, which was a clever way to both cook his food and keep his clothes warm and dry.’ (Lochlann)

"Muzza inspired me to be always happy and grateful for my situation. I value his persistence, mentality and determination." (Tom)

"I thought today was very interesting; I learned a lot more about what he went through than in the show, and about gut feelings. I also learned about why he took what did and how keeping track of time was important. It was very inspirational to hear what he went through." (Victoria)

"Muzza’s talk was a great insight into the show ‘Alone’. It was very interesting hearing about his mental and physical challenges throughout filming the show and how he overcame them. I enjoyed hearing about what he decided to bring with him and why he chose them." (Lila)
