SCHOOL SPORT VICTORIA - STATE FINALS
It was State Finals time for the Senior Boys Basketball team on 17 September, and the squad was raring to go.
Knowing it would be a tough contest, the boys started Game 1 strong against the powerhouse team from Berwick College. Some fast play from Max Connick, and excellent use of the three-point line from Jake Schubert and Josh Mundy kept the team in the contest throughout the first half. Berwick kicked away in the second half; despite excellent pressure and defence from all players, the boys went down, 50-66.
Keen to make amends in Game 2, the boys raced into the game with energy and enthusiasm against SEDA. Mundy led the charge from inside and out, while Nick Harvey tightened the defensive screws, seeing Gil Neilson pounce on a number of clutch intercepts. Jake Gribble found his aim from three, while Billy Dearricott and Camden Mould injected intensity to the game when they hit the floor. A steady run to the end saw the boys take the win 48-36.
The final game for the day was against Ballarat High School, and the team wanted to finish with a positive result. The first half see-sawed as teams battled to find run and momentum. Once again, it was Mundy’s willingness to take it to the ring that saw the team inch forward. Defensive work and tactical positioning from Mould, Schubert and Connick helped sway the needle in CMCB’s direction. Harvey and Neilson had to stay strong and work hard for rebounds in the paint, and through the grind, the boys managed to hold the ball and the lead, taking the win 67-64.
The whole team should be very proud of a solid run across three tournaments, having been beaten only once. For some of the squad, this was their last time representing CMCB in SSV sports, and we thank them for their effort, contribution, and participation in the basketball teams across many years.
Big shout-out to Mrs Pearce for all her administration, photography and driving throughout all the rounds.
