A Big, Bright Start to the Year for iGEN

From Kickstart Connection Day through to the last day of term, iGEN has been deeply connected across all year levels and groups.

Term 1 was nothing short of action-packed for the iGEN Learning Program.

The term began with our Kickstart to Connection Day, where students developed key skills and understanding for meaningful interactions within a residential aged care setting. From there, our Year 10 students wasted no time getting started, visiting residents at Mercy Health Bethlehem Home for the Aged and Golden Rise Bendigo. Enthusiasm was high from the outset, with laughter, conversation, and positive interactions filling every visit. These early connections laid strong foundations for the collaborative projects students and residents will continue working on in the coming term. We were also delighted to welcome staff from Sacred Heart College Geelong, who joined us to see iGEN in action.

Alongside this, our Year 11 iGEN students launched straight into their online meetings with residents from Mercy Health homes in Shepparton. While adjusting to online conversations took a little time, both students and residents quickly grew to look forward to their weekly catch‑ups. A major highlight came at the end of the term when students visited residents in person, enjoying quality time together and sharing lunch - an opportunity that made the relationships feel all the more special.

When our Year 10 students headed off on work experience, the iGEN timetable was enthusiastically filled by a Year 9 Football and Leadership Development group. These students generously gave up their time to engage with residents and experience what iGEN might look like in the years ahead. After a few nervous moments at the door, the group quickly found their stride, forming genuine connections and buzzing with positivity at the end of the session. A powerful takeaway for these students was recognising that they could give of themselves freely, without expecting anything in return.

The term concluded on a high note with a visit from staff as part of the Staff Spirituality Day. Activities included an Easter Hat competition, an egg hunt, and a range of group games. Colour, laughter, and big smiles defined the day, creating a joyful and inclusive atmosphere for all involved.

The strong interplay between the Mercy ministries continues to be a defining feature of the iGEN program. Across all year levels and groups, it was clear that these communities are deeply connected. With Term 2 shaping up to be just as busy, there are plenty of exciting activities and events to look forward to on the horizon.
